1990. Left Sided

I must be
In my creative
Mind
Because now
I always
First stretch
The left side.

Art

1989. Poetry Moment

Before
I had
A poetry
Moment...
Or it had me...
Like a sneeze.
It overcame me
Unexpectedly.
Now,
At least
Once in a while,
I can decide
When to be
Creative.

On Writing

1988. Why Pink Tights

Why
Pink tights
Instead
Of black ones?
The line
Shines
More divinely
In the mirror.

Art

1987. Pirouettes

What is it
When your
Pirouettes
Just work
Like magic?
A fine feeling
Of flying
For a moment...
Whirling...
With purpose,
Control,
Clarity,
And vision...
Landing....
In the air,
Suspended
By perfection.

Art

1986. Not Curious

Not wondering
Is a remarkable
Feeling
Of nothing,
Pleasant
In the absense
Of alternatives.

Long Relationships

1985. Blank

Feeling
Blank.
Once
Closed,
Now
Receptive.
Noticing,
But not
Alarmed,
By absence.
Where?
Not caring.
Is it
Empty?
Or freeing?

1984. Ting

The strangest
Thing
About being
Married
In ballet class
Is the "ting"
Sound of a ring
As it hits
The barre
When you test
Your balance
While
Remembering
The fun
You had
The prior
Evening

Happily Married in San Francisco

1983. Cat Chatter

Did you know
That cats yowl,
Just in friendly
Chatter,
Not with
Each other
But with
Their human
Companions?
Overhearing
Their people
Conversing,
Cats get
Into the act
And talk back.
I wonder
If I'll ever
Correctly
Interpret
How her
Day went.

Life in San Francisco

1982. Long Relationships

Moms love
To give advice.
It's a hobby
That grows
More fun
As kids
Advance
In life.
If timely,
It's the best
Thing
A daughter
Could enjoy
From her
Mom.
Surprised?

Long Relationships

1981. And All is Well

Once you've
Recovered
From that
Little spat
And he hasn't
Quite yet,
You can sit
And smile.
Just wait a while
Till he realizes
All is well.

Happily Married in San Francisco

1980. Er, Welcome Back, I Guess...

I've returned!
He declared.
I didn't know
You'd gone,
I responded.
He wondered
A while
What might
Be amiss.
In his absence
I'd met
And married
A prince.

Happily Married in San Francisco

1979. Small Pleasures

Happiness
On a guilded
Plate
Comes
In small
Frozen
Packages.
There's
Very little
A spoonful
Of ice cream
Can't improve.

Happily Married in San Francisco

1978. Tax Day Evening

It's Tax day eve,
Or rather,
Tax day evening -
Just hours
Before
The deadline,
Now that
It's been stretched
To mid-October.
Not like New Years
Or Christmas
And even less
Like Easter,
It's the sound
Of grim typing
Nearby,
Someone knowing
It may be best
To file
In mid-March
Next year.

Happily Married In San Francisco

1977. A Misguided Flicker of Gratification

If he says
Something
He probably
Doesn't mean,
Do I
Have the right
To respond
In kind?
Certainly.
Why,
I know
It does no
Good
But only
Feels somewhat
Gratifying
In the moment.

Happily Married in San Francisco

1976. Roughshod

Funny
Riding roughshod
Over feelings
Never feels
As good
The next day
We realize it
Hours too late
After
At least some
Damage
Is done

1974. Riding Sunbeams

How can I
Keep
The beauty
Of the sky
In my mind's
Eye
At least
To remember
How it makes
My heart fly
As though
I could skip,
Dance, leap,
Soar, dive
Riding
On a sunbeam
As the day
Glides
Gracefully
Into night

1973. Wowel

The cutest
Word in English
When mangled
By my husband
Who is Swedish
Is:
Wowel
(His way
Of saying
Vowel)

Happily Married in San Francisco

1971. G-d's Kaleidoscope

I'm not a misanthrope
I just prefer
G-d's kaleidoscope
As my family
Plays outside
With erector sets
Hoops and nets
I hear their happy cries
In summer time
And I enjoy their joys
As I watch from inside
The sky
At sunset

Long Relationships

1972. Becoming

Today
I became
A German
Teenager
In summertime
And a matador's
Spanish wife,
Next, a cygnet
And then
A fairy
Taking flight.
How can
One woman
Be
All these
In a single life?
See you in ballet
Class tonight.

Art in San Francisco

1970. Cheerful Evening Greeting

Doorbell rings
Honey shuffles
To the door
One earphone
Akimbo
As podcasts
Spin by
Double time
We kiss
Four or five
Times
And he reaches
For my hand
Wanting to feel
His and mine
Entwined

Happily Married in San Franciso

1969. Dinner Together. Who Needs to be Hungry?

A dialogue:
Honey,
You're not eating
Very much.
Did you have
A TV dinner?
Or maybe
A lot for lunch?
Honey,
I'm eating
(Keeping)
You company.
We both smiled.
He took my hand.

Happily Married in San Francisco

1966. Game Over

An ex-lover
Called me today
Asking me
How I am
And when he
Can meet
My new
Husband
...He what?
I felt
Like
Hanging up
After all
He's not
The man
I married
He has
No right
To call
Or ask me

1965. On Poet Laureate Al Young

Last weekend
We heard
Poet laureate
Al Young
We were happy
To see him
As he was
A venerable
Gentleman
Like Morpheus
Of the matrix
In his appearance
Strength
And warmth
Yet comfortably
Casual
Like the people
Who live here
He resonated
With the audience
His poems,
Though,
Couldn't hold
My attention
I remember
Only smatterings
He spoke of jazz
And he performed
His speech
Like rhythm
In music
He reminded me
Of a gentle
Scholarly
Professor
But my mind
Wandered
To my own
Writing
Why?
Later,
In the evening
I remembered
How I knew him
We saw him
The fourth
Of July
He and his
And me and mine
All collected
On a San Francisco
Hill
To watch
Colorful starbursts
In the sky
We didn't
Introduce ourselves
We stood nearby
Admiring
Another
Of the wonders
This lovely city
Provides us
We spoke briefly
Of the sparkling
Light

1961. Married Bliss

Singing
A merry tune
The best way
To start
A Friday
Evening
At home
With my husband
Each of us
With a melody
In our heart

1958. On Early Retirement

People dreaming
Of early retirement
Don't know why
They shouldn't
Want it
That's a whole
Lot of nothing
You've got
To fill
With something

This poem is a paraphrase of wisdom shared by my husband recently and my Mom regularly, both of whom think working keeps you young.

1957. Revived

I can feel
A new life
Breathing
Inside me
Not yet
A child's
But mine
My husband
Has revived me
My mind
Was dormant
For a while

Happily Married in San Francisco

The meaning of this poem is that my husband's love re-started me as a poet - a happily married poet. To all those, who may be nosy, I'm not pregnant. What I've written above is a metaphor.

1956. Holding Me Tight

I can tell by
How tightly
He holds me
That he needs
Me
As much
As I need him

Happily Married in San Francisco

1955. One Tear Transcendant

I had one tear
Left for my
Husband
After all the oceans
My soul bled
For other men
I feared
He'd never find
Me
Now he
And I
Are One

Happily Married in San Francisco

(Note to readers: this was actually my first poem written since the poems I wrote in December and January - when I first met my husband. The numbers are out of order. See #1934, titled, "Better Than Expensive" for an early introduction to my husband - on one of our first dates.)

1954. Advance Planning Works

On March 30,
2008,
I planned
And created
My husband.
My notes,
Really wishes,
Described him
Exactly.
It's uncanny.
Today,
We both stared
Amazed
To see
The precision
Of my notebook's
Predictions.

Happily Married in San Francisco

1953. Just to Entertain Us

Gliders fly
Fast, low, and high
At Ft. Funston

And cliffs
Just five
Short minutes
From where
We live
Winds just right
We can see
Them soaring
While we're kissing
Wave-side

"I'm just a man,"
He thinks,

The strength
To tame
Our dragons
And fill our

1937. The Elements of Family

Mommy, Daddy,
Where do we
Come from?
You, our eldest,
Come from the magic
Sunlit dust
In the center
Of a redwood stand.
And little you,
You come from
The ocean spray
At the top of waves.
And me, Mommy?
You come from
The warm breeze
In June.
And you, our youngest,
Come from the spark
Of our home's hearth.
Together we are eternal -
Earth, Water, Air, and Fire.

1930. Live in Color or in Greyscale - It's Your Choice

An introspection in prose:

Some believe a lack of neediness will lead you faster to your goals. I believe that lacking a sense of deep and profound need - for a certain relationship or even for non-essential items - is actually a fast way to miss out on all the real intensity and joy in life. By lacking a deep feeling of need for the non-essentials you want, you might get lucky and experience fewer of life's sorrows. But you'll certainly miss out on the intense pleasure of getting Exactly what you want Exactly when you want it. There's little enjoyment in getting something you no longer really need or want. Lacking the need for life's non-essentials means that you've greyed out all the color in your life - and settled for plain oatmeal. By contrast, intense need and fulfillment -- for education, accomplishment, purchases, experiences, deep and mutual romantic love - provide rich, multifaceted, delicious, lasting, and all encompassing pleasure in every stage - in the anticipation, during the fulfillment, and after the fact. Heck, that's what life is for. Most of life's joy is in the imagination, active pursuit, and intensely fulfilled experience of our heart's strongest felt desires. Live life intensely to get the best of it. It makes the whole endeavor worthwhile.
