45. A Beggar's Lunch

A beggar faints
Someone calls the paramedics
Her lover holds her head off the cement
Store staff members say she's begged
There for years
They watch her trouble
With idle curiosity
A half-hour earlier
She said to me,
Hello, sister, can you spare some money
I need 5 or 10 dollars to get some lunch
I'm hungry
While I sat and ate my soup and crostini
I gave her a dollar and said
That's all I could do for now
I watched with concern
As she laid stretched on the ground
